JLondon GPA Demo

about

A guy named Jaime posted an ad in BAM magazine looking for someone to play acoustic guitar for a vocal demo he wanted to make. He chose Simply Red's Holding Back the Years and Julie London's Cry me a River. This is my vocal version of the latter song to see if everything was ready for Jaime to sing it. This is me playing the Gibson and Grandpa (Faux Martin Acoustic Bass) from a practice recording at home on my own 4-track recorder.

We went into OTR studios in Belmont, CA to record the two songs. What an amazing learning experience for me in a beautiful studio. To be honest I didn't have the guitar skill yet to totally pull off a song like this but I didn't know that at the time. I dont think Jaime ended up using any of my parts.

When I first heard the Gibson thru the speakers with the reverb effects etc I was blown away by how amazing it sounded. It was an education in that place with Cookie Marenco and her staff. I was way out of my league at the time but I did my best to learn and not make it be a total loss/embarassment.

The process was always a bit manic, pressured, as if a large gorilla had stepped into my room, grabbed me by the lapels and said, "I will not let you sleep until you write this idea down." And so for years the gorilla and I danced madly thru the night.
