about

I did not know Officer John Paul Monego or his family. I was a young father, and recently out of the USAF, at the time of Officer Monego's death. My own son was 13 months old then (in Dec 1998) and maybe thats why it hit me so hard. I was one of hundreds or more who watched the procession through Livermore. The tragic nature of his death in the line of duty was nearly impossible to wrap my mind around, and my sadness/grief for his wife and 18 month old child only deepened as Christmas approached. On Christmas Eve 1998, I wrote a song for John and his young family and there has not been a Christmas season since when I have not said a prayer for them and privately played that song to ease my mind and remember.

lyrics

My Song For You
(12-24-1998)

Almost midnight, Christmas Eve
And my whole house is asleep.
But my mind's out wandering far from here,
To anothers family.

I held my little boy in my arms tonight,
out in the cold under the stars.
He looked up at me as I said this prayer aloud,
"This is for you where-ever you you are...

Dear Lord hear our prayer
It's from my little boy and me.
There's a family without their father to hold,
And that's a lonely Christmas indeed"

You never forget the day when somebody leaves,
But you learn to live with the pain.
After awhile you may even manage a smile when you,
softly whisper a name.

May there be many hands to hold you,
Through these days that seem so long.
And when the Good Lord is standing right beside you,
He will softly wrap you in his song.

"Lord hear this little boy's prayer.
It's from the whole world and me.
There's a family without their father to hold,
and that's a lonely Christmas indeed...
That's a lonely Christmas indeed."

about

Brett Allen Gregory Livermore, California

I've always been compelled to write.

Early on it was journaling and poetry, but then that merged with my guitar addiction to become songwriting.

The process was always a bit manic, pressured, as if a large gorilla had stepped into my room, grabbed me by the lapels and said, "I will not let you sleep until you write this idea down." And so for years the gorilla and I danced madly thru the night.
