about

This idea of a roadhouse tavern was kinda based on the chorus in a WIllie Nelson song called The Highway, plus some snippets of different ideas from here and there like an interview with Ringo where there are these concrete palm trees around a beautiful pool. Part of it is some Lyle style stuff as well. Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel, heck everything is in this one. This song along with Texas Twist were my showcases for the album. Lyrically I liked this one best.

I used my 12 string on this one i believe and layed down the vocals. Steve Lussie had wanted my Godin Guitar so I traded him that for his part on the song. He did the drum track, bass, telecaster and pedal steel parts.

lyrics

There's no road long enough for me
and no place I'm expected to be
Theres lovers and leavers and fools and believers
sometimes in my mirror its an old man i see

Theres an old place I like to stay
where no one knows me by my name
Theres whiskey and wishes and whispers and women
the one that you're missin just gets farther away

Chorus:
with every smoke cloud sunset under a neon sky
concrete palm trees and moonlight lullabyes
this blue motel's got everything that you need
and nothin that you don't

She took one long last look at my face
and when she spoke there was not a trace
of the laugh lines and good times, just bad lies and last tries
there's no tellin what you'll find in this old empty place

bridge: this kind of desperation takes time
I'm just an old habit she left behind
now the the echo of her words are all that I find
up here in my mind

chorus2:
Take your smoke clous sunsets, you can have your neon sky
your concrete palm trees and sing your moonlight lullabyes
if that blue motel's got everything that you need
then here's one thing that you don't

If your Blue Motel's got everything that you need
then here goes one thing that you dont

about

Brett Allen Gregory Livermore, California

I've always been compelled to write.

Early on it was journaling and poetry, but then that merged with my guitar addiction to become songwriting.

The process was always a bit manic, pressured, as if a large gorilla had stepped into my room, grabbed me by the lapels and said, "I will not let you sleep until you write this idea down." And so for years the gorilla and I danced madly thru the night.
