about

Maybe a good way to describe this song is to say it's a kind of long-exposure snap shot of where I'm at these days.

I wrote the first part in November of 2019 and then finished the rest of it in Jan of 2022.

"Life is best compared to a song - the point is not to reach the end, the point is to dance and sing while the music plays." ~paraphrased from Alan Watts

Years ago I ran across the above advice from Alan Watts and it really struck a chord with me.

I also particularly like the quote from Berthold Auerbach "Music washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life"

Then in early 2019, I got a chance to see Will Ackerman play live and as I watched and listened to him play songs and tell stories, he kept coming back to the same themes, which to me started to sound like a Musician's Creed:

~Stay Humble
~Stay True to the Music Inside You
~Keep Playing for as Long as You Can
~Be Grateful for EVERYTHING
.........................and that's the magic

and that seemed to echo and dovetail in nicely with some of my advice to myself about life that work for me:

"Life is Simple, but that doesn't mean its Easy" ~unknown

1. Live your life and live it well, there is no other obligation.
~LEARN - Keep your beginners mind
~LAUGH - especially at yourself
~LOVE - Find your passion... and FLOW!

2. Take care of your spirit.
~ATTITUDE - Sense of humor/stay positive
~GRATITUDE - Be grateful for everything
~HUMILITY - Stay humble, kind and compassionate (hint: kindness towards others eliminates negativity)

3. Take care of your body.
~Eat healthy, sleep well and exercise.

...and so from all of this, came the lyrics of the song "Another Good Day", with the title coming from something a coworker and friend of mine from 'Persia' would always say at the end of EVERY work day. Thank you for that, and all the lessons, Ahmad!

lyrics

Everyday is a good day
Every morning when I wake
Cup of coffee underneath the stars
Waitin' on a-daybreak

I say my thanks and I bow my head
Deep breath and I jump on in
Let the day take me where it may
Gotta laugh with all the crazy

And every night with the sun goin' down
This ole world keeps spinnin'
Right on around
It's headed for a good day

Some days are gonna hurt
Some days'll roll on by
You gotta learn to ride that wave
On through the end of the line
And everyday is a good day

Everyday is a good day
Let it roll don't get in the way
But when you're stuck down the side of the road, remember
"Life is simple", -don't mean that its easy

Somebody's gonna lend you a hand
Pay it back buddy when you can
Sunset's gonna shine like gold
On your skin everyday if you earn it

Colors fade and the stars start to shine
There's a rhythm playin' in my mind
It's another good day

So let that music play
Let it blow the dust away
Don't you wait til the end of the song
Before you start to sing along

There's a passion inside you
Let it flow through all your days

Everyday is a good day
Every morning when I wake
I bow my head underneath the stars
Close my eyes and I say my thanks

about

Brett Allen Gregory Livermore, California

I've always been compelled to write.

Early on it was journaling and poetry, but then that merged with my guitar addiction to become songwriting.

The process was always a bit manic, pressured, as if a large gorilla had stepped into my room, grabbed me by the lapels and said, "I will not let you sleep until you write this idea down." And so for years the gorilla and I danced madly thru the night.
